The Open Realm

Step into a world brimming with history and legend.

As you cross the threshold into the festival grounds, you will enter the ‘Ealdspell’, the ancient story of England.

Gathered here are knights, bards, craftworkers, mercenaries and outlaws, all summoned from England’s Celtic, Saxon and Medieval past. Meet historical characters, learn about the past and have a go at a range of fun activities.

Living History

Discover the way people lived in the Middle Ages with Knights of Honour. Meet historical characters in their living history encampment. There you will meet the people of the late 15th century. See the blacksmith’s forge, have a go at medieval games and ask your questions about what it was like to live 500 years ago.

Bow, Axe and Spear

In medieval England, it was the law to practise archery on a Sunday afternoon. Take part in this English custom with Northern Realms. Feel the tension of the bow string as you have a go at archery, or hurl with force the weapon of your choice as you have a go at axe and spear throwing.

Through the Centuries

Pass through the centuries and encounter fur traders, Celtic warriors, Danish cooks and Saxon textile workers. Interact with musical instruments from England’s past, and listen to troubadours like Minstrel Majesty as they wander the alleys and streets before the towers of Maxstoke Castle.

Beware the Outlaws

On your way around the festival, watch out for a band of outlaws! Dwelling in the Forbidden Forest, they have come to create mischief, merriment and mayhem. Whether a Viking raider, a member of Robin Hood’s Merry Men, or a creature from the land of the Fae, these brigands should be approached with caution!

Get hands on with the magic and history of England in the Open Realm.
